The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended defines an HBCU as:

“any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary of Education.”

Bishop College

Bishop College was founded by the Baptist Home Mission Society in 1881 in Marshall, Texas, and relocated to Dallas, Texas, in 1961. The drive to establish a Texas college for black Baptists was originally founded by Nathan Bishop, native of New York, and superintendent of the Providence, Rhode Island, and Boston, Massachusetts, school systems. The college closed in 1988 after a financial scandal led to the revocation of its accreditation, and its eligibility to receive funds from charities such as the United Negro College Fund.

Daniel Payne College was founded in Selma, AL in 1889 with 88 students. The college was named in honor of Daniel Payne, the sixth bishop of the AME Church and the first black president of a college in the United States. Financial problems brought on in part by 1977 tornado damage caused the school to declare bankruptcy and close in 1979.

Friendship College

Friendship College was founded on October 12, 1891 with 11 students, meeting in Mt. Prospect Baptist Church until a new building was complete. During the 41-year tenure of President James A Goudlock, Friendship College reorganized at three levels—an elementary school (grades 1-8), a high school, and a junior college. Even with a listed enrollment of 368, Friendship College was beginning to experience financial difficulties in 1980 and was forced to file for bankruptcy in December of 1981.

Guadalupe College

Guadalupe College was a private Baptist college for African Americans in Seguin, Texas. Its goal was to provide the African American community with an education comparable to white institutions of the day. On February 9, 1936, the main college building was destroyed in a fire. A fundraising drive was cancelled in 1937 and the college ceased operations.

Leland College was founded in 1870 as a college for blacks in New Orleans, Louisiana, but was open to all races. After its original buildings burned in 1923, it was relocated near Baker, Louisiana. Never accredited, the school closed in 1960 because of financial difficulties.

Saint Paul's College

Saint Paul's College opened its doors on September 24, 1888, originally training students as teachers and for agricultural and industrial jobs. The college also offered adult education to help assist working adults to gain undergraduate degrees. Saint Paul's College had a Single Parent Support System Program that assisted single teen parents pursuing a college education. The college had long struggled with significant financial difficulties and eventually lost is accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college sought to merge with another institution, but on June 3, 2013, the board announced the college would close on June 30, 2013.

Storer College began in 1865 as a one-room elementary school, sponsored by New England Free Baptists and the Freedmen's Bureau. It's first class was 19 formerly enslaved children who desperately needed the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. After the Brown v. Board of Education ruling found segregated public schools to be unconstitutional in 1954, the school lost state funding and closed in 1955.

Campbell College was an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) junior college, educated black college and high school students in Mississippi between 1890 and 1964. Campbell first opened in Vicksburg but moved to Jackson in 1899 in hopes of attracting more students. Despite its small size, Campbell played an important role in Jackson’s civil rights movement. In 1964, the state of Mississippi seized the college by eminent domain.

Mary Holmes College lost its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 2002 after it was unable to attract adequate money, administrators, faculty or students. It offered its last class in 2003 before pursuing bankruptcy.
